Apple offering $1 million to anyone who can hack iPhone

Apple is expanding its "buy bounty" programme to macOS, tvOS, watchOS and iCloud.

While the iPhones made available to hackers in search of their fortune are not identical to those you purchase in the store, they offer enough room in Apple's famously closed electronic ecosystem to allow for useful probes by cybersecurity geniuses. These devices will lack some layers of security protections so that their users may dig into the deeper, less examined core of the phone.

Apple gave out details about its new iOS Security Research Device program, which will be out next year. Apple's previous highest bounty was $200,000 for friendly reports of bugs that can then be fixed with software updates and not leave them exposed to criminals or spies.

Apple is expanding the scope and the financial rewards of its bug bounty programme, offering up to $1 million to security researchers that find flaws in its full range of products.

For obvious reasons, these specialized iPhones will only be given to trusted security researchers that have been vetted by Apple, although it won't be an invitation-only program - anyone is welcome to apply, but Apple will be looking for those with a "track record of high-quality systems security research on any platform".

Apple is launching a new program that will allow security experts to apply for special iPhones created to be used for research purposes. There's also a 50 percent bonus for hackers who can find weaknesses in software before it's released. The handsets come with secure shell, a root shell and advanced debugging capabilities, which make it easier for researchers to spot bugs. This means that anybody who finds a serious security bug can potentially earn a bounty by disclosing it to Apple, and there doesn't appear to even be any accreditation required. There will now be incentives for finding bugs in any of Apple's platforms, regardless of whether you're an established security expert or just a grassroots hacker sitting at home.

The phones that are part of Apple's security research program will be much different than your typical iPhone. "They could make it 5M, and it would still be worth it to them in the medium to long term".
