During the April through June quarter, Apple shipped 5.7 million Apple Watches worldwide.

Unlike the contracting smartphone market, the smartwatch market is still experiencing fast growth, although the absolute volume is still small. Samsung too has shown growth when it comes to market share and the number of shipments. The company also managed to post more than a 50% YoY increase in sales as it had shipped just 0.9 million smartwatches in the year-ago quarter.

Fitbit shipped 1.2 million smartwatches worldwide in the second quarter, dipping from 1.3 million a year ago.

Mawston added: "Fitbit has struggled to compete with Apple Watch at the higher end of the smartwatch market, while its new Versa Lite model has struggled to take-off at the lower end". Samsung's global smartwatch market share has jumped from 11 percent to 16 percent during the past year, according to Strategy Analytics. The analyst expects the company to face stiffer competition from the likes of Garmin, Fossil, and others looking to capture the market for health and fitness customers.
