Canadian Police Say Gondola Cables Cut in 'Deliberate Act of Vandalism'

Canadian Police Say Gondola Cables Cut in 'Deliberate Act of Vandalism'

Cst. Ashley MacKay said the RCMP is "confident" its main cable, which is made up of several steel strands, was deliberately cut.

RCMP say they're still assessing the damage, but early signs point to the Sea to Sky Gondola cable being cut.

Technical Safety B.C., which oversees all the tramways, gondolas, chairlifts, rope tows and passenger conveyors in B.C., and WorkSafeBC are also investigating. "With it being compromised, it affected the integrity of the entire gondola line, which caused the gondola cabins to fall".

The Squamish RCMP are now looking for witnesses and asking anyone with any information to come forward.

Couples who planned to celebrate their nuptials at the mountaintop venue in the coming weeks are scrambling to find alternate venues, as more than 200 people employed by the Sea to Sky Gondola face uncertainty over the fate of their jobs.

Weeks wrote that she is confident the gondola will be back up in full operation "as soon as they are able", but declined to comment further on how the town might be impacted.

"Our investigation is in the preliminary stages and the cause is undetermined". "Right now we are looking at all possibilities, which includes those criminal in nature". After initial assessment by the Sea to Sky Gondola the RCMP were called.

The Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish is closed for the foreseeable future due to a "major lift incident" according to an alert posted to its website.

Nearly all of the 30 gondola cars attached to the cable crashed to the ground, according to staff working overnight. Some believe that it was a local who hates tourists. "It's too early to determine whether some of the 31 cars are damaged beyond fix or can be salvaged. All those cabins are in the ground".

The gondola sustained "significant damage", according to a post by Squamish RCMP.

Ken Bailey, a spokesman for Sea to Sky Gondola, said at around 4:30 a.m., they received a report that the haul rope for the gondola had fallen and that the lift was "inoperable".

They say no guests or staff were on the gondola at the time and no one was injured.

There is now no estimated timeframe for repairs or when the Sea to Sky Gondola will reopen.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

She said an employee working at the summit heard a loud bang and discovered the cable had broken.
