Hong Kong airport cancels all departing flights over protests

Police put on a demonstration of an anti-riot water cannon on Monday, in a warning to protesters as authorities toughen their approach over violence that has roiled the Asian financial hub for two months.

Many carried images of the weekend's protesters clashing with police or wore symbolic patches over their eye. The central government now said the protesters are engaged in terrorist activities, the strongest condemnation that they have issued yet. At one point, protesters blocked the entrance to a plaza to prevent police from entering.

Activists also accused police of using excessive force over the weekend, including using tear gas and rubber bullets at retreating demonstrators.

Following weeks of protests, Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam confirmed in July that the bill would be suspended.

Legislators and journalists were invited to witness the display of extreme crowd control tactics, which Amnesty International warned last week could lead to serious injuries if misused within Hong Kong's confined spaces.

While both said they haven't been scared by the violence that has rocked Hong Kong in recent weeks, they admitted to being anxious about what could happen at the airport this evening. At a press conference this afternoon, a Hong Kong police spokesman would not rule out using tear gas to at the airport. "The police action has gone totally nonsensical", she said.

Former Trump Deputy National Security Adviser K.T. McFarland and former Army Intelligence & Special Operations Brett Velicovich says the Chinese government is very anxious the Hong Kong protests could spill over to Beijing.

Hongkong protesters occupied almost every inch of the city-state's airport on Monday after a weekend of violent clashes with the police, forcing Hong Kong's authorities to cancel all flights that day as Beijing made its frustration known by linking the demonstrations to "terrorism", feeding fears of a military crackdown. In the aftermath of the incident, Hong Kong internet users launched an eye for eye action, calling for the public to cripple Hong Kong International Airport, the news outlet reported.

Luxury fashion brands Givenchy, Versace and Coach have apologized after Chinese social media users lambasted the companies for selling T-shirts which listed Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as their own countries.

A massive traffic jam soon formed on the highway leading back to Hong Kong's city center.

"Another factor is that the 1% in Hong Kong have been enriching themselves at the expense of the 99% in a way very similar to the United States, so that people at the top have gotten richer, people at the bottom have gotten poorer".

Pro-democracy lawmakers attended the presentation holding signs that read "HK Police Murderers" and quarrelled with pro-Beijing lawmakers, who praised the police for their response to the demonstrations.

It has struggled to find middle ground after one of its pilots was arrested for rioting over his alleged participation in a Hong Kong protest.

A commentary early on Tuesday in China's official Xinhua news agency spoke of "black-clad mobsters" and said Hong Kong's future was at a "critical juncture".
