Huge power outage creates travel mayhem in Britain

Almost a million people have been affected by a major power cut across large areas of England and Wales, affecting homes and transport networks.

Disruption continued into Saturday for some routes, with services to and from King's Cross station in London particularly badly hit. Striking during rush hour, the blackout left commuters stranded in the city.

At Ipswich Hospital, a back-up generator failed to start when the power outage occurred.

A Transport for London spokeswoman said some traffic lights are "not working" but the scale of the problem is not yet known.

The incident has triggered Ofgem to demand a detailed report on the failure from National Grid and Network understands that a meeting has been convened involving all of the distribution networks and National Grid today (10 August) to review early insights into the circumstances which caused the outage.

The outage also affected several overground train services, with Thameslink tweeting that its trains had been brought to a "standstill", and London North Eastern Railway said several of its had broken down, according to PA.

Professor Tim Green, co-director of the Energy Futures Laboratory, Imperial College London, previously said that he believed the two disconnected generators were at Little Barford and Hornsea.

Mr Burt said the power cut had "nothing" to do with changes in wind speed or the variability of wind.

Blackouts were reported in London, south-east England North-West England and North-East England, South Wales and the Midlands.

The airport said in a statement the "unprecedented rainfall" caused "water damage in a number of locations in the terminal" and apologised for the disruption.

Some 110,000 were affected in Yorkshire and northeast England.

The power cut meant traffic lights were out of action across the UK.

He added: "This will require careful study to make sure that we do learn any lessons that come out of it and that the next time this happens disruption is minimised and hopefully a lot less than it was last night".

Western Power Distribution shared a similar message, and said they were in the process of restoring power to customers.

"People whose journey was severely disrupted should also keep receipts for all unexpected costs that arose from their efforts to complete their journeys yesterday, and contact their train operator to claim not just for their delay but any additional expenses they incurred".
