Hurricane Dorian track and strength updated in new Hurricane Center forecast

Dorian remains a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained wind of 85 miles per hour.

Leaving mercifully little damage in its wake in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the second hurricane of the 2019 season swirled toward the USA, with forecasters warning it will draw energy from the warm, open waters as it closes in.

But as for the storm itself, Puerto Rico had feared much more fallout.

All of the models show Dorian strengthening again soon over warm waters.

The storm caused an islandwide blackout in St. Thomas and St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and scattered power outages in St. Croix, government spokesman Richard Motta said. "We're happy because there are no damages to report", said William Solis, the mayor of the small Puerto Rican island of Culebra.

But the danger for other areas is far from over: "Dorian is forecast to strengthen into a powerful hurricane during the next couple of days", the NHC said. It's on track to smack Grand Bahama islandon Sunday and likely crash somewhere along the Florida or Georgia coasts around Monday morning.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency for 12 Georgia counties - Brantley, Bryan, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Pierce and Wayne - as Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida's coastline.

President Donald Trump canceled his weekend trip to Poland and warned Florida residents to be prepared. "All Floridians on the East Coast should have 7 days of supplies, prepare their homes & follow the track closely", DeSantis said.

Dorian had earlier developed into a political as well as meteorological storm.

"Their political system is broken and their politicians are either Incompetent or Corrupt", he said on Twitter.

Puerto Rico's former governor Ricardo Rossello was forced to resign last month in part because of criticism over his handling of the emergency created by Maria.

Early Thursday, Dorian was centered about 150 miles (240 kilometers) north-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

She told Trump "to keep his mouth shut" and let people do the work needed to save lives.

Now that Dorian has bypassed Puerto Rico and swept across the British and US Virgin Islands, Florida is now its greatest target.

It shattered the island's already shaky power grid, overwhelmed public services and left many residents homeless.

Otherwise, Dorian did not have as devastating an impact on the island as feared.

The NHC said Dorian was blowing maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h some 60 miles north-northwest of San Juan, making it a Category 1 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity. And the center could pause before it runs into land - potentially whipping cities with "inches and inches of (rain) an hour", Myers said.
