Illinois Resident Experiencing Respiratory Illness After Vaping Dies

A patient who had recently been vaping has died in hospital in the Midwestern US state of IL after developing severe respiratory illness, the local health authority said Friday.

According to the CDC, in many cases, including IL, patients have acknowledged to health care personnel recent use of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing products. But it remains to be seen as to whether the agency will amend information on its website that says: "E-cigarettes have the potential to benefit adult smokers who are not pregnant if used as a complete substitute for regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products".

Investigators haven't found a common link among patients other than the use of e-cigarettes.

The Centers for Disease Control continues to work with state and local health departments and the FDA to understand the "cause or causes" of the illness, Robert Redfield, director, said in a press statement released Friday.

IDPH director Ngozi Ezike said the department hasn't identified which products are causing the illnesses, but warns they're all unsafe.

"This tragic death in IL reinforces the serious risks associated with e-cigarette products".

However, academics in the United Kingdom have said much more research is needed and there needs to be better regulation.

IL has a particularly high concentration of the unknown lung illnesses among e-cigarette users. "I did not think that we were dealing with a safe practice to start with".

"We want answers as bad as the public does", she said. "We know the risky effects of nicotine on young people". The illness is primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, the age group with the highest rates of vaping.

Dr Scott added: 'You can go into a pound store anywhere in the country and buy e-cigarette liquid for £1.

At least half of those people have gotten sick just this past week.

The state of San Francisco has become the first major city to ban the sale of e-cigarettes.

The CDC has not stated yet whether the patients' lung illnesses were, in fact, caused by vaping.

At least two people have previously died in the U.S. after their e-cigarette exploded in their face.
