Jamie Chadwick claims inaugural W Series title despite rollercoaster race performance

The 21-year-old did just what was required at her home circuit to go down in history as the victor of the first ever all-women's championship, earning £410,000 in prize money in the process.

FIA Superlicense points - 40 of which are required to race in F1 - will be up for grabs next season as W Series expands, but Chadwick revealed she may not defend her title in 2020. By the time Visser, the only person who could deprive Chadwick of the title, pulled off the deftest pass to relegate her from the podium places, pre-race nerves threatened to give way to full-blown panic.

"I'm under no illusions as to how tough it's going to get", she said after clinching the crown with fourth place in the season's final race.

Brands Hatch was the venue, and though Chadwick started on pole, she was overtaken by second placed Alice Powell early in the race... and soon after by Emma Kimilainen, who managed to steal third place at the very start after the original third-placed starter Esmee Hawkey stalled. At the beginning of the year I thought it just might be a great season. "If I come back, I want to fight for the title again, to be sure". "I would have liked to have dominated, but it means that I've had some good racing this year, which is ultimately what they are out to achieve". Next year will also see drivers eligible to score FIA Super Licence points, which are vital in order to become a Formula One driver.

W Series founder Catherine Bond Muir hoped to add at least two races to the calendar next year, probably in Europe before a possible inter-continental expansion into the United States and Asia in 2021.

"I've never felt attention from the spectators as much as I did today, and that really is a credit to W Series". Next year, the W Series victor will also get points. At turn two, Chadwick uncharacteristically dropped to third as Powell slipped through the gap to take the lead and Kimilainen followed into second.

"I think we've done that now and next year has got to be all about the drivers and telling the drivers' stories and introducing the personalities and characters".
