Jio GigaFiber service to launch on 5 Sept 2019

The biggest news was of course was the date of the Jio Fiber commercial launch - September 5.

JioFiber plans will start from Rs 700 per month and will offer a host of smart services through the Jio set-top box.

Mukesh Ambani also said that the most Jio Fibre plans will start at 100 mbps, which means the price war on home fibre has started.

Jio also launched "Jio first day first show": Every premium Jio Fiber customer will now be able to watch new movies at home the same day they are released in theatres.

Separately, the Jio set-top box was announced, and it is claimed to be created to accept TV signals from LCO partners. The company also intends to provide unlimited ISD calling service to the U.S. and Canada from Jio landline at a fixed monthly rental of Rs. 500. At present, Jio users get a free subscription to Hotstar.

Tariff details of more costly, unlimited plans on GigaFiber are not known yet. "So, Jio Fiber customers, who opt for our annual plans-which we call Jio Forever plans-will get an HD or 4K LED television, and a 4K set-top box absolutely free", Ambani said.

The annual plans will come bundled with 4K TV offer which will work with Jio TV to deliver Live TV viewing experience.

Reliance Jio announced its foray into broadband service at last year's AGM with the launch of JioFiber. Further, the company announced that it aims to become net zero-debt company in the next 18 months and plans to list Reliance Jio and its retail business in the next five years.

With regard to cloud infrastructure, Ambani announced that RIL has entered into a long-term alliance with Microsoft to "accelerate digital transformation".

"Jio has made India data-shining bright".

Edge computing and virtual/ mixed reality content plans were also announced by Ambani at the event, with plans for pan-India edge computing and CDN with tens of thousands of nodes, all to deliver content for entertainment, shopping, gaming, and education. It announced that it was investing 14 tech startups. These applications along with Jio connectivity will be provided at a tenth of the cost, i.e., starting at Rs. 1,500 per month.
