Liverpool hit by Alisson Becker injury blow - Klopp confirms

Alisson will miss the next several weeks with a calf injury, according to Jurgen Klopp.

The Brazilian goalkeeper is facing a number of weeks on the sidelines after being forced off in the first half of the 4-1 win. "It's a calf injury which takes him obviously out for a while", he told reporters.

"I think the main thing in our minds is that we still see ourselves as underdogs, we still see ourselves as a hungry team that hasn't achieved what we want to achieve yet".

The annual match sees the Champions League winners take on the Europa League victors from the previous season, with some viewing it is as an important game and others claiming it's little more than a glorified friendly.

Virgil van Dijk believes goalkeeper Adrián San Miguel's extensive Premier League experience will help him easily adjust to replacing the injured Alisson at Liverpool.

The 35-year-old, a free agent after being released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season., was part of the squad during pre-season and is still training with the club.

Klopp confirmed that he will be without Alisson for the UEFA Super Cup clash with Chelsea this week and that he could be without the netminder for a period of weeks.

That will come as some relief given Liverpool's keeper shortage, with former West Ham back-up Adrian set to deputise. Alisson started every Premier League match last season and generates attacking moves with his ability to pass out from the back. "I didn't speak to John [Achterberg, Liverpool goalkeeping coach] yet about that".

"We will be able to make good connections with him and I think a lot of the lads have made bonds with him already because he's such a good lad off the pitch".

"He was in with us, he's a brilliant character, a really nice lad and helped us a lot in the pre-season, and now we (have) chose to work together with him".

Alisson signed for the Merseyside club in the summer of 2018 for a fee of £62million from Roma.
