NASA shows off a handsome new image of Jupiter

This global map of Jupiter released by NASA on August 8, 2019 was created using imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope. These hues and their changes can provide important details on Jupiter's evolving atmosphere.

Another striking image spotted by Hubble on Jupiter is the planet's developing cyclone, which appears as an elongated feature right below the Great Red Spot.

Jupiter's bands, which are developed by differences in thickness and height of ammonia ice clouds, are confined to the north and south by jet streams that don't change, even if the bands start to vary in color.

Unlike Earth's solar-powered atmosphere, Jupiter's chaotic weather system is driven from blistering temperatures from within its gaseous core, churning a brilliant swirl of colorful gasses on the planet's surface. The lighter bands rise the highest, while thicker clouds represent the darker ribbons in the band.

The Great Red Spot storm, which has lasted 150 years that we know of, is continuing to shrink - but astronomers don't know why.

NASA's latest portraits of Jupiter were snapped on June 27, 2019, when Hubble had a good view of the Great Red Spot.

Scientist have no idea why the Great Red Spot is shrinking and continue to observe Jupiter try and learn why.

The two white oval features are anticyclones, essentially smaller versions of the Great Red Spot. The colors of the clouds, which move in opposite directions, are caused by the varying pressure in Jupiter's atmosphere.

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveals the intricate, detailed beauty of Jupiter's clouds in this new image taken on 27 June 2019 by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, when the planet was 644 million kilometres from Earth - its closest distance this year.

Parallel cloud bands also stand out.

"A worm-shaped feature located below the Great Red Spot is a cyclone, a vortex around a low-pressure area with winds spinning in the opposite direction from the Red Spot", NASA stated.

The new image was taken in visible light as part of the Outer Planets Atmospheres Legacy program, or OPAL.

The bands are all separated by winds that can reach speeds of up to 400 miles per hour (644 kmh).
