SpaceX Rocket Launch Of AMOS-17 Set For August 6, 2019

AMOS-17 is a replacement launch for the AMOS-6 satellite that was destroyed in a fiery explosion during a Space static test fire in September 2016.

SpaceX announced it will begin to perform regular dedicated Falcon 9 rideshare missions between late 2020 and early 2021. That was about 30 minutes past the originally planned launch time, with the liftoff delayed while SpaceX officials monitored questionable weather conditions in Florida.

The launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying an AMOS-17 Israeli communications satellite is scheduled to liftoff on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The Amos 17 satellite will be located at 17 degrees east where it will reach across Africa and the Middle East.

The fairing is part of the protective cover at the top of the Falcon 9, which shields payloads as they're lifted into orbit. Through the SpaceX's rideshare program, the smaller satellites will be launched on time with or without other satellites. (SpaceX did not state the total weight the deployer could hold for these ride-shares.) Once in orbit, each satellite will be deployed into space one by one by the tube.

It marks the start of a busy week at the Cape.

While rideshare on earth has become a very competitive market space with big names such as Uber, Lyft, and Juno trying to cement their position, Musk has been playing on a whole different level by enabling rideshare launches for satellites.

The SpaceX launch window opens at 7:23 p.m. Tuesday and remains open until 8:21. The Air Force's 45th Space Wing forecasts about a 40 percent chance of favorable weather for launch.

The Falcon 9 stands some 230 feet (70 meters) in height and has nine Merlin 1D engines in the first of its two stages. Prior to this evening's launch, the stage was used on the Telstar-19 VANTAGE mission in July 2018 and the Es'hail-2 mission in November 2018. This is the company's workhorse Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

Amos-17 is created to operate for 20 years - five more than the average geostationary communications satellite.
