Steelers receivers coach Darryl Drake dies at 62

He said he was a close friend who had "a tremendous impact" on his coaching career and who "loved the game of football and every player he coached".

Darryl Drake with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015. One of the players he recruited to Georiga was Hines Ward, who looked back on the impact Drake had on his life shortly after the news of Drake's passing broke on Sunday. It is impossible to overstate his impact on the game in almost four decades as a coach in college and the NFL.

According to the Tribune-Review, Drake said coaching gave him a chance to impact someone's life.

"WKU Football was better because of our association with him". Previously, Drake was the wide receivers coach for the Chicago Bears (2004-12) and the Arizona Cardinals (2013-17).

Drake was 62. He joined the Steelers coaching staff in 2018.

Drake was entering his second season with the Steelers and had been present throughout training camp.

Drake's pupils through the years include Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald, longtime National Football League wide receiver Brandon Marshall and Antonio Brown, who played for Drake in 2018 before being traded to Oakland this spring.

He moved on to the same position with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 before joining Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin's staff past year. "He was an awesome husband, father and grandfather, and it is hard to put into words the grief our entire team is going through right now". He played college football at Western Kentucky and later coached there. We will use our faith to guide us and help his family throughout (this) hard time.

"I never really recognized that fact early, but when I started getting calls from guys I had coached 20 to 25 years ago and they would say, 'You said this to me or you did this for me or you gave me an opportunity to do this, ' it made me a better father". That's why so many players have taken to social media to express the gratitude for him in the hours after his passing.

Drake is survived by his wife, three children and his grandchildren.

The Steelers said the team's scheduled practice on Sunday at Saint Vincent College was canceled.
