Suffolk's Alexander Albon gets Red Bull promotion

Red Bull Racing has demoted Pierre Gasly after just 12 races of the Formula One season and promoted Alexander Albon to race alongside Max Verstappen.

"Red Bull are in the unique position of having four talented Formula 1 drivers under contract who can be rotated between the [main] team and Toro Rosso", said a team statement.

"Everyone at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing looks forward to welcoming Alex to the Team and supporting him during the next phase of his F1 career".

From the Belgian Grand Prix, Gasly will be out of the team - for now, at least - and Alex Albon in. Looking at the bigger picture, Gasly had a lot on his shoulders in 2019 because Max Verstappen is in a league of his own.

Daniil Kvyat had been considered favourite to move up from Toro Rosso had Red Bull chose to drop Gasly either during this year or ahead of next season.

Gasly, also 23, is in his second full season in Formula 1 - he competed in five Grand Prix in the 2017 campaign - and has garnered 63 points thus far this term with fourth in the British Grand Prix his best performance. The 23-year old has piloted that team's Honda-powered cars with aplomb, finishing sixth in the wet at the German Grand Prix in late July, and he has amassed 16 points in a lesser auto compared to the Aston Martin cars. He sits in fifth place with 132 points, 69 points ahead of the 23-year-old Frenchman, and he has scored 75 points in the last six races alone.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner and Red Bull motorsport chief Helmut Marko had so far dismissed replacing Gasly by either Albon or Toro Rosso returnee Dany Kvyat.

Gasly had performed well past year at Toro Rosso and moved up to Red Bull when Australian Daniel Ricciardo made a decision to move to Renault. Expectations will be kept in check with Albon, however, as the 2019 season is his first in F1 and he was only drafted into Toro Rosso at relatively late notice over the winter.

"But in terms of having those two in one team, I haven't heard from Lewis either that he wants to join next year". Meanwhile, Albon has impressed in his debut season in F1, scoring 16 points for Red Bull's junior team Toro Rosso.
