The Beatles announce 50th anniversary 'Abbey Road' box sets

The Beatles' Abbey Road is getting the deluxe reissue treatment for the album's 50th anniversary. For example, McCartney's 1993 concert album, Paul Is Live, shows the rock legend being pulled across Abbey Road by a sheepdog on a leash, and the cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1988 release, The Abbey Road E.P, . shows the band members making the crossing naked except for white tube socks over their genitals.

The Beatles are celebrating 50 years of Abbey Road by unveiling a number of remastered box sets for hardcore fans.

On Aug. 8, 1969, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr held up traffic on the zebra crossing outside their recording studio to get the internationally celebrated cover shot.

The artwork for The Fab Four's final album was shot by Iain Macmillan on 8 August 1969, and the record itself was later released on 26 September the same year.

The spot remains a place of pilgrimage for Beatles fans from around the world. The crosswalk has become a tourist destination in London, which scores of fans recreating the album cover every day.

The studios, which were later renamed Abbey Road, and the zebra crossing in north London were granted protected status by the British government in 2010.

The album's 17 tracks have been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell in stereo, high res stereo, 5.1 surround, and Dolby Atmos, accompanied by 23 session recordings and demos, most of which are previously unreleased.

Lawmaker Louise Ellman, who represents Liverpool Riverside, said she had come down to join the celebrations.

Since 2010, EarthCam has been making it possible for nearly 54 million global viewers to virtually "visit" Abbey Road crossing in London.

"The poems in the lyrics are full of love, full of peace, all their lessons are [about] being yourself, be free, do what you want."
