Two Cases of West Nile Virus Has Seen in Los Angeles

In a follow-up on the West Nile virus (WNV) situation in Clark County, Nevada, officials with the Southern Nevada Health District have reported the 12th human WNV case of the year.

Each individual turned sick with West Nile, which is transmitted to people through a mosquito bite, late last month and are recovering, officers stated on Monday.

"We care about mosquitos because they have an extraordinary ability to spread disease", Skiles said in an email.

They also reported nine birds with West Nile virus in Cypress, Buena Park, Huntington Beach and Tustin.

That said, a small percentage of people - roughly 1 in 5 - develop a fever and may additionally experience headaches, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash, among other signs of the virus, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "So, everyone should take protective action by using mosquito repellent when outdoors and getting rid of items in their homes or yards that collect standing water where mosquitoes can breed", Davis added. WNV can affect the nervous system and result in meningitis, encephalitis, paralysis and even death.

DUSK and DAWN-This is when mosquitoes are most active. On its website, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health provides further guidelines for those seeking information on preventative measures. More than three-quarters of reported cases have had severe disease and approximately 7% of patients with severe WNV have died from complications.

"Residents should also use an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent, such as DEET", Skiles said.

There have been a few confirmed cases of West Nile in Nebraska in Hall, Phelps, Douglass, Box Butte and Garden counties. "It is critical that residents take the necessary steps to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sources and prevent mosquito bites".
