Uganda: One Ebola Case Confirmed in Kasese District

In June, two people who travelled from DRC died in Uganda while a third who was part of the same visiting family died after he was sent back home.

Earlier in August, the authorities came up against new fronts in their fight to contain the epidemic, fanning fears that the spread of the disease could accelerate.

In an effort to combat the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has doubled the number of outbreak response experts and will have 30 responders on the ground by September 1.

Mortality rates of Ebola disease are extremely high, with the human case fatality rate ranging from 50 per cent to 89 per cent, depending on viral subtype, according to the World Health Organisation.

While Uganda has managed to control Ebola from spreading beyond Kasese district, availability of the vaccine, manufactured by the USA firm Merck, is limited.

Dr Tedros will accompany UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on his mission to the country this weekend, along with senior officials, including Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.
