United Kingdom deploys more public health experts to DRC for Ebola outbreak response

And on Thursday, the first anniversary of the outbreak's declaration, neighboring Rwanda shut its border crossings with Congo, threatening trade on which hundreds of thousands of people are dependent.

The closure comes after a man died of Ebola in Congo's major city of Goma, which is on the Rwandan border.

A third patient tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, shortly after second Ebola patient died in Goma, a large city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, raising concern in the region about an epidemic.

If the case is confirmed, it would be the first transmission of Ebola in this outbreak inside Goma.

In a statement, President Felix Tshisekedi's office condemned a "unilateral decision by the Rwandan authorities" that affected citizens from both countries who had to cross the border as part of their daily life.

The UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST) is deploying more public health specialists to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as the country's Ebola outbreak reaches the one-year mark.

DRC journalist, Fiston Mahamba tweeted-#RDC / #Rwanda: Following the detection of a third case of #Ebola in the town of #Goma, the Rwandan authorities have just closed the borders between the city of #Gisenyi (@RubavuDistrict) and the one at #Goma.

Rwanda's state minister for foreign affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe confirmed the border closure to The Associated Press, a day after World Health Organization officials had praised African nations for keeping their borders open.

In the neighboring province of South Kivu, fifteen people were quarantined in a locality on Lake Kivu.

The health ministry has said the 1-year-old daughter of the man who died of Ebola this week in Goma now has the disease.

World Health Organization coordinator Boubacar Diallo said the fourth case "is the wife of the man who died yesterday morning".

An AFP reporter in Goma and a resident in Gisenyi each confirmed the frontier had been closed. For months health officials had feared that an Ebola case would be confirmed there.

He had reportedly spent several days with his family while exhibiting symptoms according to Abedi. She said many of them "think that being taken to the Ebola treatment center is like being taken to the death house" when the centers actually provide "an incredibly high standard of care".

Since the declaration of the epidemic on August 1, 2018, no case has been recorded in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, which is two hours by plane from the main sources of infection.

It is transmitted through contact with infected body fluids. Ilunga had personally overseen the response until then, and was respected by many health workers, even as the outbreak seemed to be getting out of hand under his leadership.

Ebola caused global alarm in 2014 when the worst outbreak began in West Africa, killing over 11,300 people and infecting an estimated 28,600 as it swept through Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
