A rare 'Micro Harvest Moon' will appear this weekend

Take note skywatchers, because this weekend a full "harvest" moon will appear in the night sky across the United States-and for some, it may even be visible on Friday 13. The rare occurrence on the superstitious date has stargazers around the world buzzing with excitement.

If you live in the Central, Mountain or Pacific time zones, the moment the moon turns full will be the evening of Friday the 13th.

It won't happen again until August 13th, 2049.

The name "harvest moon" is an old European term applied to a full moon that rises closest to the beginning of fall, NASA says.

Here in the United Kingdom, the Harvest Moon will arrive around 5.32am BST (4.32am UTC). In this alignment-which occurs roughly every once a month-the face of the moon that we can see is fully illuminated, appearing like a flawless circle.

The Harvest Moon is said to symbolize when farmers would need to start gathering in food to prepare for the lean winter months.

The next full Moon will be early Saturday morning, September 14, 2019.

"What sets this upcoming full moon apart from the others is that farmers, at the peak of the current harvest season, can work late into the night by this moon's light", explains the almanac.

When viewed from Los Angeles, the Full Moon will peak around 9.32pm PDT.

Why is the Harvest Moon so special this year?

That means Friday the 13th will be extra spooky!

Mr Rao said: "To add to this Full Moon "madness", this upcoming Full Moon very almost coincides with apogee - that point in its orbit which places it at its greatest distance from the Earth: 252,100 miles away".

The opposite of a micromoon is a "supermoon" when the the moon is at perigee, or at the closest point to the Earth in its orbit.
