Apple Watch Series 5 launches with always-on display

So, where does Apple's wristwear go from here?

The Series 5 doesn't come cheap, though, so many of our readers are probably wondering, "should I jump the gun, or go for one of the older models instead?" Worldwide emergency calling also works with fall detection, if enabled, to automatically place an emergency call if Apple Watch senses the user has taken a hard fall and remains motionless for about a minute.

But the event had some good news for price-conscious consumers: With the debut of the Series 5, Apple announced it would be lowering the price of its Series 3 to $199 - a considerable price cut for an item previously associated with luxury. If you haven't worn an Apple Watch before, it's easy to dismiss the Series 4 as being identical to its predecessor, save for the larger screen.

Apple's HomeKit platform hasn't advanced as quickly as its Google and Alexa counterparts, largely due to the closed-off nature of Apple's third-party integration requirements, and lack of focus on the HomePod in general.

Apple Watch Series 5 is available in a wider range of materials, including aluminium, stainless steel, ceramic and all-new titanium build. We've already got a full rundown of the new iPhone 11, but here's everything else Apple announced including the new iPad, Apple Watch, and more.

Series 5 of the Apple Watch includes a number of new features and innovations, the headline addition being an always-on Retina display, so you can tell the time (and more) without having to raise your arm or tap on the screen first. This substantial battery life improvement is apparently thanks to a new low-temperature polysilicon and oxide display and low-power display driver. But how? Well, this is possible through multiple technologies that work together in tandem.

The device has a new Super Retina XDR display and is powered by Apple's new A13 Bionic chip, which the company claims is the fastest processor ever in a smartphone, capable of one trillion operations per second.

Apple hasn't been shy about the Apple Watch's use for monitoring your health and fitness. That means you have more space for music, podcasts, apps, and whatever else you want on your Apple Watch. Not much has changed physically from Series 4. Joining the ranks of other heath features, like early warnings based on ECG readings and fall detection, is the ability to make an emergency call on any cellular Apple Watch around the world. Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 5 will begin this Friday, September 13, at 5:00 am PT/8:00 am ET, and the new smartwatch will be available in stores starting September 20.

The Apple Watch Series 5 runs watchOS out of the box, and it has a handful of neat new features relating to health tracking.
