Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas at unprecedented intensity for that island nation, and as the most intense storm on record at landfall in the North Atlantic Ocean Basin. The correspondent said he had spoken to a man whose wife had died of hypothermia after being trapped in their flooded home for hours and others who said they had watched people swept away by the storm surge.

"Apocalyptic. It looks like a bomb went off", Lia Head-Rigby, who helps run a local hurricane relief organisation, said about Abaco Island.

At least five deaths were reported.

Scientists say climate change generally has been fuelling more powerful and wetter storms, and the only recorded hurricane more powerful than Dorian was Allen in 1980, with 305kmh winds, though it did not hit land at that strength.

As the Labour Day weekend drew to a close, hundreds of thousands of people in Florida, Georgia and SC - more than 800,000 in SC alone, and half a million in Georgia - were warned to evacuate for fear that Dorian could bring life-threatening storm-surge flooding even if the hurricane's centre stayed offshore, as forecast.

The Bahamas' prime minister also expected more deaths and predicted that rebuilding would require "a massive, coordinated effort".

The storm's relentless winds and rain battered homes and businesses on the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, which have a combined population of about 70,000 and are no more than 12m above sea level at their highest points.

The Grand Bahama airport was under 6 feet (2 meters) of water.

The storm finally moved off the Bahamas and headed toward Florida on Tuesday as a Category 2 hurricane.

Over 2 million people along the coast in Florida, Georgia and North and SC were warned to evacuate.

Red Cross spokesperson Matthew Cochrane said more than 13,000 houses appear to have been destroyed in Grand Bahama and Abaco.

While it was expected to stay offshore, meteorologist Daniel Brown cautioned that "only a small deviation" could draw the storm's unsafe core toward land. Several schools along the Georgian coast have done the same.

The storm is inching northwest and potentially up the East Coast of the USA with sustained winds of 177 kilometres per hour, dropping it to Category 2 status.

A hurricane watch was in effect for Florida's East Coast from Deerfield Beach north to South Santee River in SC. Authorities expect Hurricane Dorian to come "dangerously close" to Florida where evacuation orders are in place, along with South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia.

"I know it's a mandatory evacuation, but everyone I talked to is staying, and I don't know what to do".
