Bahamas brace for impact as Hurricane Dorian closes in

Zone B includes the barrier islands, land areas north and south of the Jupiter Inlet, and other surge-vulnerable areas south along the Intracoastal Waterway to the Broward County line.

The storm surge warning spans from near West Palm Beach to Titusville. "Worst weather arrives early Tuesday and departs early Wednesday".

Dauss and her family spent Sunday boarding up the windows and doors at her mom's home inside Briny Beeezes in Ocean Ridge as Hurricane Dorian leaves the community on edge.

Dorian slammed into Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands at 12:40 p.m., and then made a second landfall near Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island at 2 p.m., after authorities made last-minute pleas for those in low-lying areas to evacuate.

Matthew: in 2016, it was a category five storm that later made landfalls in Haiti, Cuba and Grand Bahama Island as a major hurricane.

"This is a life-threatening situation".

"Everyone there should take immediate shelter and not venture into the eye", the centre said. The storm has slowed early Monday and is moving west at 5 miles per hour.

"Even if it does bypass us we'll still be a lot safer if we move out", Murray said.

"Life-threatening storm surge and risky hurricane-force winds are still possible along portions of the Florida east coast by the middle part of this week", the Hurricane Center wrote. "And I've seen some Category 4's - you don't even see them that much", Trump said.

As Dorian creeps west over or near Grand Bahama Island, the area seeing winds over 40 miles per hour will slowly move toward the Florida coast.

Storms this powerful typically tend to undergo cycles that weaken their high-end winds for a time, but Dorian has avoided this dynamic.

The National Hurricane Center's 5 p.m. EDT update said it expects "a prolonged period of catastrophic winds" and storm surge to affect the Abacos Islands and the Grand Bahama Island on Sunday night.

Roughly 100,000 of the 370,000 Bahamas population live in areas that are going to be hit by the storm, according to Bahamas Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Kevin Peter Turnquest, adding in a response to queries that Abaco suffered "severe destruction of homes and infrastructure".

A Category 5 hurricane will flatten many homes, snap trees and power lines, and leave the area "uninhabitable for weeks or months", the hurricane center said. The only other is Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Hurricane Dorian has gained strength over the last few days.

With wind and rain possible without direct landfall, many Florida residents are still preparing; Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced voluntary evacuations for Osceola County, Glades, Hendry and Indian River counties, as well as in parts of Palm Beach County that are not under mandatory evacuation orders.

Dorian has grown, which may have implications for the Florida forecast. Currently, hurricane-force winds extend 45 miles (75 km) from the hurricane's center. Therefore, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Broward County.

"It is once again emphasized that although the official track forecast does not show landfall, users should not focus on the exact track".

Hurricane Katrina, which killed over 1,800 people across the US Gulf Coast in 2005, was also a Category 5.

Hurricane Dorian will track very near or offshore the Central and North Florida coastline. But, Carr said, "It could still get close as it passes offshore". Because the storm is predicted to be a slow mover, effects from wind, rain and storm surge could be prolonged, lingering through the middle of next week.

SC and Georgia's governors ordered mandatory coastline evacuations beginning at noon on Labor Day and school and state office closings on Tuesday, as the historic hurricane took aim at the East Coast. "At this point, monitoring the motion of Dorian tick by tick using radar, satellite, and aircraft observations will reveal potential changes more meaningfully than model guidance; even a 1 miles per hour faster average speed risks bringing the eyewall of Dorian to the east Florida coastline".

However, this collapse in steering currents is so close to Florida that some models continue to track the storm close enough for damaging impacts in parts of the state.
