British lawmakers vote to reject 2nd gov't bid for snap election

British lawmakers vote to reject 2nd gov't bid for snap election

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has suffered another humiliating defeat in Britain's Parliament after his second bid for a snap general election was rejected by MPs.

Although the government won the motion by a 293 - 46 vote, it nonetheless failed to reach the two-thirds majority of 434 under the fixed term parliament is required to call a general election.

Johnson had wanted an election on October 15, hoping he would win enough seats in the Commons to force through his Brexit plan.

Then, early Tuesday, lawmakers rebuffed, for a second time, Johnson's request for an early election, which he said was "the only way to break the deadlock in the House".

The former Attorney General, who lost his place in the Conservative Party after being one of 21 MPs sacked for voting against the Government in a key no deal Brexit vote last week, said public officials had given him information relating to prorogation that informed him "they believed the handling of this matter smacked of scandal".

The result of the past week of Parliamentary defeats is that Johnson is required by law either to get a Brexit deal or to seek delay Britain's departure from the European Union past the current target date of October 31. The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, announced that he will resign on October 31 and not seek re-election as an MP.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar warned Johnson that "there's no such thing as a clean break", and if Britain crashed out, it would "cause severe disruption for British and Irish people alike".

Johnson was also heavily criticised for ignoring the new law and curbing any parliamentary oversight by suspending the parliament until 14 October.

SEND TWO LETTERS The law, which came into force on Monday, specifies the exact wording of the letter that Johnson has to send to the European Union, but it does not exclude the possibility of sending a second letter setting out a different position.

Mr Grieve used the Parliamentary device of a humble address to the Queen in order to ask for the documents to be brought before the House of Commons by ministers by no later than 11pm on Wednesday.

His opponents last week denied his bid to secure a general election before the October 31 deadline for leaving the EU.

Mr Johnson said: "It's plain from the turbulent reaction of the benches opposite that they simply want another delay and I will not have that".

Is that a compromise that could allow the prime minister to declare his concerns have been allayed?

The setback came on a tumultuous day for Mr Johnson, who was also ordered to hand over private messages and emails sent by no-deal Brexit aides and plotters.

That deal has been rejected by parliament three times, and trashed by Johnson - largely because of a clause relating to arrangements on the Irish border after Brexit.

Ursula von der Leyen, who will replace the current president of the EU's executive branch, Jean-Claude Juncker, in November, said a no-deal Brexit "will be way more hard than an orderly Brexit".

The PM said on Tuesday he would not go to Brussels request an extension to the October 31 deadline, however, there's speculation in Westminster surrounding two possible ways around this.

If both sides fail to reach a deal, Johnson will not ask for another extension.

The comments marked a change of tone, if not substance, for Johnson, who is accused by opponents of driving Britain at full-tilt toward a cliff-edge Brexit.

There are a lot of questions in all this and here's one more: if that is the route the United Kingdom government chooses, could they get enough MPs to support it?

Mr Bone said: "We're talking the rule of law".

Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson sits in the back of a vehicle as he leaves parliament in London, Monday, Sept. 9, 2019.

"There is a simple way for MPs to resolve this", Mr Slack said.
"We are open to alternatives, but they must be realistic ones, legally binding and workable and we haven't received such proposals to date", the Taoiseach said.

Opposition to the backstop was a key reason Britain's Parliament rejected May's Brexit deal with the European Union three times earlier this year.

Bercow, whose control of business in Britain's House of Commons has made him a central player in the Brexit drama, announced he would step down after a decade in the job.
