Coast Guard captain details 'miracle' rescue of trapped crew members

Rescuers used a helicopter to land on the side of the Golden Ray and rappelled down the hull.

The U.S. Coast Guard says it has rescued the fourth and final crew member from an overturned auto carrier vessel in waters off the coast of Brunswick, Ga., after reporting earlier in the day that all but one had been pulled to safety. Six Koreans, 13 Filipinos and a USA citizen were rescued before the Coast Guard made contact with a remaining four in the engine room Monday.

The 656ft vehicle carrier was stuck in the shipping channel, closing the busy Port of Brunswick.

A fourth and final crew member who was trapped inside a cargo ship that capsized off the United States coast has been rescued.

The cargo ship, owned by Hyundai Glovis, carries vehicles and had just been unloaded and reloaded by longshoremen at the Port of Brunswick in the hours before it began leaning, according to a longshoreman who spoke to CNN.

Once salvage professionals have determined the vessel to be stable, we will identify the best option to continue our rescue efforts for the four crew members who remain on board.

"They were subject to some pretty tough conditions over the last day and a half", he told a press briefing.

The Golden Ray, which is 656-feet-long, 106-feet-wide, was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, the ministry said.

A crew member of the cargo ship Golden Ray is helped off the capsized ship this morning.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

A South Korea foreign ministry statement said Monday that the crew members were alive and isolated inside an engine room.

Reed said rescuers passed food and water through the hole to the men.

Oil sheen spotted in the water of St. Simons Sound where the ship overturned was being soaked up by absorbent boom that acts like a string of large cotton balls, said Petty Officer Luke Clayton, a Coast Guard spokesman. "Outstanding", Reed said from the scene during the final rescue.

Rescuers drilled a three inch hole overnight through the ship's hull and made contact with the crew members, who had been listed as missing.

Only ships carrying perishable goods that can't be rerouted are being allowed into the port, Clayton said, while others are being diverted to nearby seaports such as Savannah and Charleston, South Carolina.

Dickinson said it isn't clear if weather conditions caused the ship to lurch.

They were rescued around 4 and 5 a.m., VanderWeit said.

Scott Cornell, the COO of Glovis America, a subsidiary of Hyundai Glovis, told CNN the company follows worldwide maritime regulations on properly securing its cargo during transport.

Almost 614,000 vehicles and heavy machinery units moved across Brunswick's docks in the 2019 fiscal year, which ended June 30, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.
