Death linked to vaping could be first in Oregon

They said the symptoms are consistent with 200 similar cases around the country. Boclair, a user of e-cigarettes, is connected to a heart and lung machine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

One of those states is Pennsylvania, where its Department of Health says there now are 17 suspected cases of vaping-associated lung injuries, according to a report Wednesday on WHTM TV27.

"Before the new illness reports, OHA was already concerned about the health risks of vaping products", officials said.

"We would like them to do more research before saying all vaping is bad", said Randy Burch, the owner of Euphoria Vapor.

State health officials in Oregon have now linked the death of man in July to a severe respiratory illness believed to be caused by an e-cigarette, according to a statement from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) released on Tuesday. The state is hoping to use this information to help build a more complete picture of the problem.

"We don't yet know the exact cause of these illnesses - whether they're caused by contaminants, ingredients in the liquid or something else, such as the device itself", says Thomas.

This process is essential, in part to ensure providers rule out all potential causes for the condition, Steinberg said.

"There's a lot of harmful chemicals that are produced through the vaping process and we don't know much about it", Kendrick said.

America's mysterious vaping scare continues to get worse. Redfield and Sharpless make clear there is not one single product that links all of the cases, despite THC and cannabinoids being noted in many cases.

"While some cases in each of the states are similar and appear to be linked to e-cigarette product use, more information is needed to determine what is causing the respiratory illnesses", according to an August 30 statement from the CDC. "But a large number [of confirmed cases] seem to involve THC oils purchased from 'pop-up shops'". Some are also calling for the federal government to take a more active role in overseeing these devices.

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden of OR said he will introduce legislation next week that would tax e-cigarettes in the same way as traditional cigarettes to reduce the appeal to teenagers who are increasingly taking up the popular smoking alternative.

"Our investigation has not yielded exactly what it is in this product", Thomas said. "The FDA is trying to be cautious and evidence-based, but common-sense regulations need to be put in place as soon as possible".

Investigators are focusing on marijuana-derived THC in the Minnesota cases of teens and young adults who developed vaping-related lung illnesses this summer.

Wyden cited statistics that 40 percent of high school seniors have reported using e-cigarettes. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer directed the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to ban the sale of flavored nicotine vaping products in stores and online and ban the misleading marketing of products as "clean", "safe", or "healthy", according to mlive.com.
