Google Earth search leads to remains of man missing for 22 years

Remains of a man, who had gone missing 22 years ago, were finally found after one of his former Florida neighbors zoomed in on the lake in Google Satellite Images where he noticed a auto swamped into it, authorities revealed.

He had called his girlfriend at around 9: 30 p.m.to say he will be home soon, but she never heard from him again.

William Earl Moldt was reported missing on November 8, 1997, when he didn't return from a night out in Lantana, Fla.

He was 40 when he went missing.

According to a USA database which profiles unsolved missing people cases, Moldt's vehicle was visible on a Google Earth satellite photo of the area since 2007.

The police received a report of a vehicle submerged in a pond on Moon Bay Circle, Wellington, Florida.

The 50-year-old Wellington man called the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, which found the remains of William Earl Moldt, a Lake Worth resident last seen in 1997.

Moldt's body was found still inside his vehicle, which had been submerged in the pond near the housing project.

The case appeared to go cold and was taken on by the Charley Project, an initiative which keeps details of missing people after they stop receiving press attention. Using his personal drone, the current resident confirmed there was a auto in the pond and contacted police. Deputies were called out to Palm Beach County retention pond August 28 on a report of a submerged vehicle; inside the auto were skeletal remains that, the sheriff's office says, were identified as Moldt on Tuesday.

The remains were transported to the Medical Examiner's Office for processing, and on Tuesday, they were positively identified as Moldt.

Barry Fay couldn't believe what a neighbor was telling him: Google Earth showed a auto rotting at the bottom of a pond behind his home.

"You can't determine what happened that many years ago, what transpired", police spokeswoman Barbera said. He did not appear to be intoxicated when he left, though he reportedly had several drinks at the bar.

At least that may lead to some form of closure for his family.
