Hurricane Dorian washed up a brick of cocaine on a Florida beach

A brick of cocaine washed up on a Florida beach Tuesday from waves churned up by Hurricane Dorian, police said.

"It happened before the storm, it was on Friday, Aug. 30, it was just a beachgoer that saw a red travel duffel bag that looked suspicious", Sergeant Manny Hernandez of Cocoa Beach Police Department told Fox Business.

On Tuesday, Melbourne police at Paradise Beach Park were alerted that something suspicious had been washed ashore.

A narcotics team is investigating exactly where the narcotics came from.

Officials in northeastern Florida are urging people to stay away from the beaches due to possible storm surge from Hurricane Dorian.

According to Business Insider, a single kilogram of cocaine can sell for US$20,000 on the black market.

The cocaine find pales in comparison to the huge haul that washed up on an Auckland beach last month.

The collective street value of the 16 bricks found on Paradise and Cocoa Beaches is thought to be around $400,000.

The brick was tested and was determined to be a kilo of cocaine, the spokeswoman said, adding that it will be destroyed.

"As soon as it's reported, we contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection, who then conduct their investigation", he said.

Twenty packages of the drug were found by police after a local out for an early morning beach walk raised the alarm.
