MI to become the first state to ban flavored e-cigarettes

As of today, MI is the first state in the entire nation to ban flavored e-cigarettes.

"As governor, my number one priority is keeping our kids safe", Whitmer said in a statement.

Ms Whitmer said: "Right now, companies selling vaping products are using candy flavours to hook children on nicotine and misleading claims to promote the belief that these products are safe".

The ban is expected to cover both retail and online sales and will go into effect immediately.

The ban will last for six months.

Last year, the FDA announced a series of enforcement actions against more than 1,300 retailers and five major manufacturers for catering vaping products to children.

'The recent outbreak of respiratory illnesses associated with e-cigarette use has only added to the uncertainty and increased the need for immediate action'. The investigation mirrors a probe by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is tracking a rash of roughly 200 similar lung illnesses across 23 states.

MI is the first in the USA to specifically flavored e-cigarettes, but San Francisco also instituted a city-wide ban on all vaping in June.

In this undated stock photo, a teen is smoking an e-cigarette. MI officials are investigating six such cases. In response to the San Francisco measure, Juul spokesman Ted Kwong previously argued that "this full prohibition will drive former adult smokers who successfully switched to vapor products back to deadly cigarettes, deny the opportunity to switch for current adult smokers, and create a thriving black market instead of addressing the actual causes of underage access and use".

Whitmer's announcement drew praise from public health groups and criticism from organizations that advocate for vaping.

"This shameless attempt at backdoor prohibition will close down several hundred MI small businesses and could send tens of thousands of ex-smokers back to deadly combustible cigarettes", Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association, said in a news release. These rates are still climbing, likely fueled by the availability of flavors akin to apple juice, bubble gum, and Nerds.

She cited a study that showed just previous year, 21 percent of American high school students and 5 percent of middle school students - we are talking children as young as 12-reported having used e-cigarettes or other vape products within a 30-day period.
