N. Korea says it tested a 'super-large multiple rocket launcher'

Trump announced he had fired Bolton a day after North Korea signaled a new willingness to resume stalled denuclearization talks, but it then proceeded with the latest in a spate of missile test launches.

As for criticism that South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff have not revealed more about Tuesday's launches, . including the projectiles' flight altitude, the Joint Chiefs responded that it's due to concerns about exposing the South Korean military's intel gathering.

State media in North Korea say the country's leader oversaw the test of a "super-large multiple rocket launcher " on Tuesday.

The test appeared to be of 600 mm caliber multiple-launch rocket system that North Korea first introduced last month, said Ankit Panda, an adjunct senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists.

In April, Kim said he was open to another summit with Trump but set the end of the year as a deadline for the U.S.to offer improved terms for an agreement to revive the nuclear diplomacy.

North Korea was due to come into focus when UN General Assembly meeting starts next week in NY after a UN Security Panel report said Pyongyang was violating sanctions to help fund its weapons program.

Observers see North Korea's continued weapons tests as a way to strengthen its diplomatic hand and pressure the U.S.to make more concessions when the two sides resume nuclear talks.

China urged the United States on Thursday to adopt an approach more conducive to dialogue in response to North Korea's goodwill in wanting to resume denuclearization talks. Some experts said the North Korean weapons tests were also a demonstration of its expanding weapons arsenal aimed at boosting its leverage ahead of new talks with the United States.

Three of them were shown to have been uncovered after the launch, while the remaining tube was blocked. raising speculations that one of the launches could have been a misfire. gone undetected by the South Korean military. The remarks, which follow a speech Friday by lead US negotiator Stephen Biegun, represented some of the regime's most positive remarks about talks since President Donald Trump's June 30 meeting with Kim.

US -led diplomacy aimed at stripping North Korea of nuclear weapons collapsed after the second summit between Kim and President Donald Trump in Vietnam in February ended without any agreement due to disputes over USA -led sanctions on the North. Kim and Trump met again at a Korean border village in late June and agreed to resume talks. After their latest meeting, the US said Kim had agreed to begin detailed negotiations by mid-July.
