One killed, five wounded in new Johannesburg violence

Mobs began looting foreign-owned shops and torching foreigners' lorries on Monday.

After a brief lull, the violence resumed in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Around the country, these and various other protests have seemed to go instantly from spark to full-blown expressions of citizens' rage, with police forced to use rubber bullets, tear gas, stun grenades, water cannons and, in some instance around Johannesburg, live ammunition, to quell the unrest.

Overall, however, Cele reiterated that the solution to re-establishing feelings of security and safety, while simultaneously restoring business confidence, was not a "one-off" and that it could not be achieved exclusively by government.

The country has become a magnet for migrants from other parts of Africa because it has one of the continent's biggest and most developed economies. Video footage circulating the internet depicts Nigerians attacking drivers who were believed to be from South Africa in the street, as well as footage of protestors destroying and targeting South African stores. Another seven people died in similar attacks in 2015.

MTN Group chief executive Rob Shuter said the mobile network operated in 17 African countries, with more than 200 million customers.

"There is great concern that this violence is going to escalate, with much of the violence having been fuelled by rumours", Miller said.

He appealed to Zimbabweans in South Africa to respect the South African laws the same way the Zimbabwean Government will expect foreigners to adhere to the country's regulations. "My message was to say we are family with the other African countries", Buthelezi said, as his speech was met with disruption and chaos.

"The President of South Africa should send a sharp signal to South Africans and the continent by visiting the victims of the Afrophobia attacks to empathize with and reassure them of their safety in South Africa and the government should consider paying compensations for losses sustained in the attacks".

Nigeria's Consul General in Johannesburg, Godwin Adama, said on Sunday he expects more Nigerians to indicate interest in leaving South Africa.

However, the Chairman, CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon.

President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the latest round of attacks and called on law-enforcement agencies to deal firmly with those responsible.

"Nobody anywhere should think that anybody supports this kind of behaviour, whether by South Africans or by foreign nationals in South Africa", Cele said.
