Pennsylvania: Couple Gets Thefts Charges For Using Money Mistakenly Deposited

When a Pennsylvania couple woke up to discover $120,000 had accidentally been transferred into their bank account, they made a decision to go on a massive spending spree.

The couple allegedly began spending the cash, paying off bills and buying a camper, according to reports.

Rather than checking with the bank on the nature of the deposit, the pair allegedly spent more than $100,000 on a number of household items, including a $15,000 down payment on a 2015 Chevy Traverse, two four-wheelers for about $10,000, a $4,500 camper and a race vehicle.

When the bank notified the Williamses they were on the hook for the remaining $107,416, Tiffany Williams, 35, reportedly told bank officials that she no longer had any of the funds after paying off bills.

Both Robert, 36, and his 35-year-old wife were arraigned on charges for theft and receiving stolen property in the U.S. state Pennsylvania.

State troopers say Robert and Tiffany Williams failed to report the unexpected windfall to BB&T Bank.

The couple, according to the affidavit, had just over $1100 in their bank account when the error occurred.Rather than call the bank to point out the mistake, the couple went on a shopping spree and even helped friends out with some of their new-found riches. After numerous attempts to get in contact with the couple, the bank contacted police in July 2019.

That triggered an overdraft, since the couple had already spent most of the money, state police said.

With all the procedures the banks have set up, checking and double-checking and triple-checking. "She told the bank her husband had spent a great portion of the funds and purchased a four-wheeler", according to the Gazette. She also told them that she would talk to her husband to come up with a repayment agreement.

The Montoursville, Pennsylvania couple allegedly spent most of the money between June 3 and June 19.

Nate Weaver, a Montoursville resident, said he was stunned by the couple's alleged actions. They have both been released on $25000 bail each.

"I would check in with the bank first before I didn't anything, I'm not that dumb but some people do stupid things sometimes", said Robert Painton.
