Research By Movemeber Reveals Men's Mental Health At Work A Problem

World Suicide Prevention Day is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and it takes place on 10th September every year.

Suicides increased by 14 percent in the West Bank last year compared to the previous year, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported Monday, pointing to depression as the leading cause.

Movember, a charity dedicated to changing the face of men's health, is urging men to talk about their mental health issues and challenges in the "Man of More Words" campaign.

Stigma, particularly surrounding mental disorders and suicide, means many people thinking of taking their own life or who have attempted suicide are not seeking help and are therefore not getting the help they need.

He called on "all countries to incorporate proven suicide prevention strategies into national health and education programs in a sustainable way".

The most common methods of suicide are hanging, gunshots and - especially in rural areas - the ingestion of poisonous pesticides.

"Nearly three times as many men as women die by suicide in high-income countries, in contrast to low- and middle-income countries, where the rate is more equal", the World Health Organization statement said.

"While 79% of the world's suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries, high-income countries had the highest rate, at 11.5 per 100,000" people, WHO said.

Also figuring high on the list were Lithuania, Lesotho, Uganda, Sri Lanka, South Korea, India and Japan, as well as the United States, which registered 13.7 suicides per 100,000 people.

Data shows that suicide disproportionately affects men, with almost three times as many men as women dying by suicide in high-income countries.

"The time to take action is now - Australia can not afford another decade of increasing suicide rates", she said.

"Research shows that while a previous suicide attempt is a strong risk factor for suicide, most people who survive a suicide attempt do not go on to die by suicide, or even make a repeat attempt".

Suicide was the second leading cause of death among young people aged between 15 and 29, after road injury, and among teenage girls aged 15 to 19 it was the second biggest killer after maternal conditions.

Tuesday was World Suicide Prevention Day and Sadag said from January this year, it had received nearly 42,000 calls on its suicide helpline.

"Suicides are preventable", said the WHO's director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Two studies published in May found that suicides among USA youths rose significantly in the months following the popular show's release in 2017.

Keith Walker, Chairman of Highland area Multi Agency Suicide Prevention Group said: "If someone you are close to shows signs of not being themselves, you will normally notice".

Often, involvement from one outside person expressing interest can deflect someone from attempting suicide.
