Taliban Says Trump Would Regret Abandoning Talks

However, on Monday Trump doubled down, telling reporters that the talks between the US and the Taliban are "dead as far as I'm concerned".

Last month Trump said he would reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan from 14,000 to 8,600 and didn't link the withdrawal to an agreement with the Taliban.

The president stunned the world on Saturday when he announced the cancellation of a secret meeting with the Taliban and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at Camp David near Washington.

Despite the Afghan government's wariness of negotiating with the Taliban, Trump had hoped having both parties at the presidential retreat could produce a deal.

On Thursday, a Taliban vehicle bomb exploded and killed an American soldier, a Romanian service member and 10 civilians in a busy diplomatic area near the U.S. Embassy in Kabul.

"We have to remember the realities on the ground and the fact Afghans are being killed in large numbers", he says.

But as he canceled the meeting, Trump also declared the peace negotiations "dead".

Getting out of Afghanistan, where United States troops have fought against the Taliban for almost two decades, has been a top priority for Trump and on Monday he reiterated his intention of pulling out "by the earliest possible time".

"If Trump wants to stop talks, we will take the first way and they will soon regret it", he said.

But Trump denied any discord among government members including Vice President Mike Pence. The Taliban have said that under the "finalized" deal the intra-Afghan talks were set to begin on September 23, five days before the vote.

He insisted that the militant group had not violated any terms and added that there would be no promises before signing the deal.

In his interview to Fox News, Pompeo said that the USA and Taliban negotiators had been working for months for a peace and reconciliation deal.

U.S. has already spent trillions of USA dollars and 2,400 United States servicemen have been killed so far since the invasion in Afghanistan, so now it wants to call back its troops. They said the United States negotiating team was "happy with the progress made so far" in Doha and the talks were held "in a good atmosphere".

"Today more than ever Afghanistan needs a political leadership who will receive from citizens a renewed democratic mandate to set the country on a course to peace", the European Union's mission to Afghanistan said.

Trump said that he has not discussed about the possibility of meeting with the Taliban in the future.

Responding to a question, Trump said that he has a specific number of troops that he would withdraw from Afghanistan, but would not tell the media.

The suspension throws into doubt last week's draft deal agreed between the U.S. and the Taliban which would have seen a major USA troop withdrawal - offering Washington an opportunity to end its longest-running conflict.

Bringing US troops home from Afghanistan has been one of Trump's main foreign policy objectives. "I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations", he wrote.
