Teenager goes blind after only eating junk food since primary school

Teenager goes blind after only eating junk food since primary school

A youngster is now blind as a result of he has exclusively ever eaten chips and white bread, a medical journal stories.

A teenage boy has permanently damaged his sight due to his poor diet of mostly chips and crisps (Nick Ansell/PA).

Researchers at the Bristol Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom said the boy first visited his family doctor as a 14yearold with a normal body mass index, but complained of tiredness.

Blood tests showed he was anaemic, due to low B12 that causes fatigue.

The boy was blind by the time he reached 17.

The teen's vitamin B12 shots had lapsed, he had low copper, selenium and vitamin D levels, abnormally high zinc levels, and, alarmingly, he was losing bone.

The boy, now 19, was diagnosed with nutritional optic neuropathy, when the optic nerve is affected by a lack of proper nutrients.

The boy's mother told the Telegraph that the teen's condition has "devastated his life" and that he's since dropped out of college.

As for his eyes, he is still able to walk around on his own because he retained his peripheral vision, but with blind spots in the center of his vision he will never be able to drive and would find it hard to read, watch TV or discern faces.

He now meets the criteria for being registered legally blind and is unable to drive, though his functional peripheral vision means he is able to walk around unaided. That paltry collection of foodstuffs made up the entirety of his diet since primary school, when he was allowed to say he didn't enjoy the "textures" of fresh food and allowed to indulge in the freakish eating regime, simply rebranding himself as a "fussy eater" to get away with it. "Had it been caught early it would have been reversible".

He has always been skinny so we had no weight concerns. AFRID isn't picky eating.

"The general advice is to try and introduce one new food, maybe two, at each mealtime and, if your child refuses to eat that particular food, don't force them to eat it or get worked up about it", Dr Atan said.

While the family wish to remain unnamed, they have agreed for the case to be reported in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine to raise awareness of ARFID, as well as the importance of nutrition for good eye and ear health.

The researchers concluded that the patient's "junk food" diet and limited intake of nutritional vitamins and minerals resulted in the onset of nutritional optic neuropathy.

Editor's note: While the teen has been described as a "fussy eater", it has been suggested he has a little-known eating disorder known as ARFID, or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

She said: "We couldn't believe it when we were told what had happened". His teachers became concerned too.
