Dorian, packing sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour with higher gusts, was classified as a Category 3 storm, diminished from when it first slammed into the Bahamas as a most risky Category 5 hurricane and stalled over the popular vacation mecca.

Grand Bahama Island was still in the path of Hurricane Dorian on Tuesday and the area continues to endure devastating weather conditions produced by the hurricane's eyewall, according to the National Hurricane Center. Its winds were down to a still-dangerous 110 miles per hour (175 kph).

The death comes as the USA braces for Hurricane Dorian, which is heading to the mainland as a Category 2 storm after pummeling the Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane over the weekend.

"It's dark, communication is down, we do not know what's going on right now", Iram Lewis, a member of Parliament in the Bahamas, told "GMA" Tuesday.

Millions of people from Florida to SC have been ordered to evacuate.

The Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas may require food for 14,500 people and Grand Bahama for 45,700 people, the U.N. World Food Programme said in a statement.

"A great deal of uncertainty remains regarding Dorian's track as it approaches the New England region, and the forecast may change significantly between now and this weekend", MEMA said.

"We have not been able to assess the damages on Grand Bahama Island just yet".

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster ordered mandatory evacuations for parts of eight coastal counties effective at noon local time (6 p.m. CEST) on Monday. It remained almost stationary 25 miles northeast of Freeport, Bahamas and 105 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida - the same position it was in at 9 a.m. Monday. "And then they're looking for folks in distress that they can get to", he said.

At one point, Dorian was forecasted to make landfall in Florida, between Jupiter and West Palm Beach near President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.

The Bahamian government on Tuesday reduced the storm advisory from a hurricane warning to a topical storm warning for Grand Bahama and the Abacos, according to an earlier alert from NHC.

After days of warnings to flee a storm that at its peak was rated at the top of the scale of hurricane strength, many residents of Florida's coast remained unsure whether to wait it out or evacuate.

"We have not seen much resistance at all", he said.
