Trump marks another 9/11 anniversary with war still raging

The UNAMA mission to Afghanistan expires in mid-September and, according to diplomats, efforts to extend it have hit trouble over China's push for the new mandate to include mention of Beijing's Belt and Road global infrastructure project.

Early on Wednesday, the anniversary of the 9/11 attack in the U.S., a powerful explosion occurred near the United States embassy in Afghanistan's capital Kabul.

President Donald Trump warned Wednesday that what he describes as an unprecedented U.S. military assault against the Taliban in Afghanistan is to continue just five days after he scrapped peace talks. He added, per the Washington Post, "I'm not even talking about nuclear power".

Like Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, Trump remembered the victims, first responders and USA troops who have battled in Afghanistan, where the Taliban hosted al-Qaida leaders as they plotted 9/11.

In the almost 18 years of fighting since then, the number of US troops in Afghanistan soared to 100,000 and dropped dramatically after bin Laden was killed in neighboring Pakistan in 2011.

As part of the proposed deal, the United States is required to withdraw 5,400 of its troops from Afghanistan within 20 weeks of the signing of the agreement.

Now about 14,000 USA troops remain and Trump has called it "ridiculous" that they are still in Afghanistan after so long and so many billions of dollars spent. His move comes after nine rounds of talks between the U.S. and Taliban representatives, held in Doha, the capital of the Gulf state of Qatar.

A auto bomb attack last week in the capital that killed a US service member prompted President Donald Trump to call off secret talks he was planning to conduct with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Taliban leaders at Camp David. I want to talk to these Taliban negotiators.

"Credible elections would provide an important political foundation for the future of the country as well as legitimacy and authority to the elected president, which would be particularly important in view of the expected peace process", he said. I said that's the end of them, get them out, and we're hitting them very hard.

They set the example, Trump said, for all Americans "today and every day to treasure our liberty, to live up to our values, to prove ourselves worthy to our heroes, to never ever forget".

The top Democrats vying for the nod to challenge Trump in 2020 also have called for the removal of USA troops, though they have offered different timetables and parameters for any such withdrawal.
