United Nations atomic wachdog confirms Iran installing new centrifuges

Behrouz Kamalvandi, a spokesperson for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, said Saturday that Iran had started injecting uranium gas into centrifuges.

But in response to U.S. sanctions imposed since Washington withdrew from the deal in May past year, Iran has been breaching the limits it imposed on its atomic activities step by step.

Also on Monday, China - which along with France, Germany, Britain and Russian Federation is also a signatory to the JCPOA - called on the U.S. to "give up its wrong approach such as unilateral sanctions and extreme pressure against Iran".

In a statement released Monday, the United Nations nuclear watchdog confirmed that it was able to verify on September 7 "that the following centrifuges were either installed or being installed.: 22 IR-4, one IR-5, 30 IR-6 and three IR-6", with "IR" referring to Iran's centrifuge equipment.

Iran has so far taken three steps to reduce its obligations under the pact, to store more than 300 kilograms of uranium enriched to 3.67 percent and heavy water, to increase the purity of fissile material and, finally, to activate more advanced centrifuges to increase the power of its nuclear program for peaceful purposes.

The IAEA's latest statements come a day after Tehran hit out at European powers, saying they had left Iran little option but to scale back its commitments under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It can use far fewer advanced centrifuges for research but without accumulating enriched uranium.

Both the USA and Israel have pushed the IAEA to look further into a warehouse near Tehran where Israel alleges there is evidence Iran stored "massive amounts of equipment and material" before clearing it out.

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said the European Union was supposed to "fill the vacuum" left by Washington's withdrawal past year from the deal, but unfortunately it failed to keep that promise.

The controversial Obama administration-brokered deal has been complicated by the United States' unilateral withdrawal under President Trump and the current administration's imposition of sanctions on Tehran, which have taken a heavy toll on the Iranian economy.

The deal "is no one-way street; it was supposed to be a two-way path", he said in a meeting with acting IAEA director general Cornel Feruta in Tehran. He said the US and other IAEA member states were "eager to get a full report as soon as possible". But it did say Iran's cooperation could be better.

"I also stressed the need for Iran to respond promptly to agency questions related to the completeness of Iran's safeguards declarations", Feruta said. He said he was pleased with the tone and input from the Iranian side, and his message had been "very well understood".

According to ABC News, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Monday "the USA should abandon wrong practices such as unilateral sanctions and maximum pressure on Iran". Europe failed to do that before a deadline set by Tehran last Friday, leading to the latest breach by Iran of the nuclear deal's terms.

The Elysee Palace in Paris said Macron and Putin agreed "all concerned parties" should act to "ease tensions".
