US Suspects Iran Nuclear Activity over its Lack of Cooperation with IAEA

This is a further breach of the 2015 nuclear deal Iran signed with world powers, as the use of advanced centrifuges to enrich uranium is completely banned by the deal.

President Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani could have a meeting later this month at the United Nations, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday.

"Iran won't have a nuclear weapon on our watch", Pompeo said on Sunday.

"Now the president has made clear, he is happy to take a meeting with no preconditions, but we are maintaining the maximum pressure campaign", Mnuchin said, just days after Iran said it had fired up centrifuges to boost its enriched uranium stockpiles. However, Pompeo highlighted that exiting the JCPOA was the best course of action considering that it has had a hugely detrimental effect on the Iranian economy, effectively reducing its capacity to build nuclear weapons. He also said that "terror attacks around the world increased under the JCPOA".

Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and the European Union have been attempting to salvage the Obama administration-era settlement that limits Iran to working 5,060 older mannequin IR-1 centrifuges.

An Iranian expert said that any signal from the Iranian side for talks with the United States under the current circumstances would show disadvantage toward Iran.

Washington then imposed harsher sanctions on Iran's oil exports and other key industries, as well as on top officials and part of its military, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

Esper's remarks followed Trump's gestures on September 4 that he would be willing to meet with Rouhani at the U.N. General Assembly in NY later this month.

"If any IAEA member-state including the United States or Israel has credible information, they should give it to the agency rather than make a public-relations show out of this", Kimball said. "Iran should straighten out, because frankly they are in a very bad position right now and they should straighten it out because they could straighten it out very easy". But the White House has held firm on not conducting talks with preset conditions.

Macron proposed a summit between Trump and the Iranian leadership, a prospect that sparked interest from the mogul-turned-president but which is adamantly opposed by Netanyahu, who is facing elections next week and sees Iran as an existential threat.
