What Next in Britain's Brexit Crisis?

What Next in Britain's Brexit Crisis?

Britain's Queen Elizabeth gave her approval Monday to legislation seeking to block Prime Minister Boris Johnson from carrying out a no-deal Brexit, his plan to take the country out of the European Union on October 31 without spelling out the terms of the split.

The step, known as Royal Assent, is effectively a rubber-stamp from the monarch for the law which passed through parliament last week despite opposition from the government.

As he navigates the Brexit storm, Johnson was due to suspend parliament for over a month from Monday after it votes on his latest demand for a snap election, a vote that is likely to go against him.

Britain on Tuesday stated there could be a return of duty-free purchasing for vacationers to the European Union if the nation leaves the bloc with no deal.

The UK PM Johnson said earlier today that he would not request a Brexit extension to the EU. He wants an election to break the deadlock.

Johnson's no-deal Brexit plans have been opposed by a majority of parliamentarians, including 21 Conservative lawmakers, among them Winston Churchill's grandson, who worked to thwart the Tory prime minister.

Those going to the European Union won't have to pay United Kingdom excise duties on cigarettes and alcohol in a no-deal scenario, Britain's Treasury said, adding that a bottle of wine bought at London's Heathrow airport could be up to 2.23 pounds cheaper.

Mr Johnson had hoped his risk to dawdle away and not using a deal would persuade them to renegotiate, and says MPs' actions non-public undermined his approach.

Ireland told Johnson on Monday that he must make specific proposals on the future of the Irish border if there is to be any hope of averting a no-deal Brexit, saying Dublin can not rely on simple promises.

But the main opposition Labour party said it would only back an election once "no deal" was off the table.

If Johnson wins a subsequent election, or can forge a pact with the eurosceptic Brexit Party, he could still force through a "no deal" divorce in the months ahead.
