Xenophobia: Fleeing Nigerians arrive Lagos from South Africa

The group of about 300 passengers took advantage of a free evacuation offer by local airline operator, Air Peace. A private airline volunteered to airlift the fleeing nationals.

At a press conference with business leaders on Monday, South Africa's police minister Bheki Cele tried to deemphasize the role of xenophobia in the attacks saying the police were focused on criminality by all actors regardless of nationality.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that officials of the South African government had arrested a Nigerian who was leaving the country.

Frustrated after returning from the airport, Nigerians flocked the gates of their consulate in Johannesburg yesterday, demanding that they be allowed to return home.

But reactions to the current wave of attacks have been exacerbated by misinformation as videos and images unrelated to the recent incidents have gone viral, resulting in reprisals in Nigeria and Zambia with several outlets of South-Africa owned businesses including retailers Shoprite, PicknPay and telecoms operator MTN all being targeted around the country.

"There was about a five hour delay courtesy of the South African authorities who actually frustrated this return of Nigerians", she said, blaming authorities in Johannesburg for failing to help Nigerians without travel documents.

An Air Peace Boeing 777 aircraft had left Nigeria on Tuesday and arrived at OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa, at about 4:00 a.m.to airlift the first of the two batches of returnees.

"People are crying everywhere [and] there's nothing we can do", he said.

The Air Peace flight MEN2759 conveying 188 Nigerians from South Africa has arrived at the global wing of the Murtala Muhammed worldwide Airport (MMIA) in Lagos at 9:35 pm local time.

He believes that the Nigerian government should have sorted out the repatriation logistics to avoid the chaos of some people being denied access to the flights.

"They told me they are still trying to resolve the documentation of those wanting to leave", he said.
