Ahead of Her Olympics Debut, Naomi Osaka Announces She Will Represent Japan

Tennis huge title Naomi Osaka has made a decision to buy Eastern over American nationality with an detect on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, public broadcaster NHK reported Thursday. Since Osaka's 22nd birthday is on October 16, she has to make a choice - and she's choosing Japan.

Osaka, who will be 22 next week, has reportedly completed all the necessary preparations to maintain her Japanese citizenship.

The 21-year-old, born in Japan to a Haitian father and Japanese mother but raised in the United States, told NHK it will be special for her to represent host Japan at the Tokyo Games, the public broadcaster said.

Osaka was born in Japan to Japanese and Haitian parents before the family moved to NY when she was three.

Osaka now lives and trains in the United States.

And while Japan has largely embraced Osaka, she still faces some indignities. "I think that will be one of the most memorable things that ever happens to me".

According to the Olympic Channel, Osaka will be eligible for Japan's Olympic team if she plays for Japan in one more International Tennis Federation national team competition.

Osaka has competed under the Japanese flag on the WTA Tour and has represented that country in the Fed Cup dating back to 2017.

Osaka added she wants to aim for the gold although she is also anxious as expectations will be high. "It's also a very big honor to even be participating", she said.

She won the Pan Pacific Open in Osaka, Japan in mid-September, and beat world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in the final of the China Open last week.
