England 'not good enough' in loss to Czech Republic - Gareth Southgate

"I think whatever the balance, we didn't use the ball well enough", said the England boss, whose side face Bulgaria in Sofia on Monday.

Manager Gareth Southgate defended individual players from criticism but said that his team needed to be better when not in possession.

"We didn't play well enough, simple as that".

"We knew that Frank Lampard and John Terry would be very important managers, but as teammates we first thought that John Terry would come to this level".

"We probably should've got a draw out of it, but in the end the goal we conceded was typical of the chances we gave up throughout the night".

"Collectively we have to accept there were not enough good performances".

"I think it's unfortunate because you can foresee the risk". We've got to get a response and it's going to be an interesting couple of days for all of us because we haven't had a result like that, we haven't had a performance like that and we'll learn a lot more about ourselves over the next 48-72 hours.

'We have to respond in the right way'.

"We conceded too many poor chances and we gave the ball away too many times". As I say, I want the players to be able to concentrate on football.

"We tried to change the shape in the first half but it didn't work as well as it might", admitted Southgate.

"My concern is always for these players like [Harry] Maguire and [Michael] Keane, they're in their mid-20s", he said on ITV, where he was working as a pundit.

"Inevitably, because we've suffered a situation in Montenegro, we wanted to be clear what might happen if something happened in the future. We knew we'd have to be at full tilt to deal with the Czech Republic but we should have been strong enough to deal with them".
