Hundreds of arrests as London climate change activists vow more protests

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Wednesday condemned this week's Extinction Rebellion protests saying activists are putting themselves and others at risk, and soaking up valuable police and emergency services resources.

The action is the group's second global demonstration - the first was in April, and saw more than 1,000 people arrested in London.

Hundreds of protestors have also marched to Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square. Those demonstrations caused major disruption in the city and resulted in over 1,100 arrests.

The environmental activists succeeded in closing off Lambeth bridge and the Mall and planned to shut down other key sites in central London, including Westminster Bridge, in addition to protests outside government departments.

"So we're here again, and we're going to stay here until they actually do something", she told CBS News.

Human rights advocates say the Queensland government's plan to fast-track laws to jail activists who lock themselves to concrete drums will erode the public's right to peaceful protest.

Vancouver police say 10 people were arrested late Monday for obstruction of justice after they refused to leave the Burrard Street Bridge linking the city's downtown to the west side.

In a friendly atmosphere, in the rain, they held a citizen's assembly in the middle of Tuesday morning to discuss the day's activities and the logistical organization of the camp.

Queensland Police will also have increased powers to search people they suspect are carrying unsafe objects.

"I am afraid the security people didn't want me to come along tonight because they said the road was full of uncooperative crusties", he said, using a slang term for eco-protesters.

"I'm up here for my daughters". Such a scene played out in cities around the world throughout the day.

The Extinction Rebellion group has been taking action in several countries including Britain, Germany, Austria, Australia, France and New Zealand as it lobbies politicians to go further in cutting carbon emissions. On Tuesday, some protesters hit back at him. Protesters also threw red paint on the iconic Charging Bull statue near Wall Street.

At lunchtime on Monday, another 300 people blocked Berlin's central Potsdamer Platz, placing couches, tables, chairs and flowerpots on the road. They earlier set up a tent camp outside German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office out of dissatisfaction with her government's climate policy. "They are telling us to panic". Traffic was restored just after 8:30 a.m.
