Leave.EU deletes Angela Merkel ‘Kraut’ tweet and apologises

The Number 10 source said that the government's legal team is looking into loopholes in the Benn Act which would allow the United Kingdom to deliver Brexit, as promised, on October 31st.

One German official said Merkel was well aware of the blame game Johnson's office has started, but did not intend to join in trading blows in public.

European Council President Donald Tusk expressed this assumption in a Twitter rant aimed directly at Boris Johnson.

Last month, they passed a law requiring the government to postpone Brexit rather than leave without a deal on the scheduled October 31 departure date.

Johnson and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar reiterated their desire for a Brexit deal in a phone conversation on Tuesday evening and agreed to meet later this week, a Downing Street spokesperson said. "And of course it isn't really".

Mr Johnson's office gave a gloomy assessment after a call between the prime minister and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday morning.

Johnson says he will obey the law, but will not ask for a delay.

Johnson insists Northern Ireland must leave the EU's customs union with the rest of the UK.

Jane Foley, a senior foreign exchange strategist at Rabobank, said the Guardian article showed "the odds increasing of a delay until summer next year".

She said: "The EU position has not changed".

"She said Ireland is the government's special problem and Ireland must at least have a veto on NI leaving.

DUBLIN, Oct 9 ― It will be very hard to secure a Brexit agreement by next week with big gaps remaining in the British position, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said yesterday following a phone call with his British counterpart, Boris Johnson.

The EU has always argued that Northern Ireland must remain inside the European customs union in order to ensure there are no physical checks on goods crossing the land border with Ireland. He emphasised that the UK's proposal represents a significant step and a reasonable compromise which respects the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement, the single market and provides for democratic consent in Northern Ireland.

The EU has said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson needs to have workable proposals by the end of the week if there is to be any chance of a breakthrough at the October 17-18 EU summit.

The Tánaiste, Simon Coveney also moved to dismiss what he called the "misinformation" circulating about the Brexit process.

But Labour's shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer told MPs the government was "intent on collapsing the talks and engaging in a reckless blame game".

A group of anti-Brexit activists have staged a protest at the European Commission's headquarters in Brussels asking for the European Union to reject British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's proposals for his country's planned exit from the bloc.

Driving a wave of British frustrations with the saga, Johnson is threatening to depart at any value - with or and not using a withdrawal deal - on October 31.

Act, requires Johnson to write to the European Union asking for an extension until 31 January if he fails to get a Brexit deal agreed at Westminster by 19 October.

Mr Tusk, who has previously spoken of a "special place in hell" for those who promoted Brexit without a plan, took aim at Mr Johnson in an angry tweet yesterday.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies think-tank meanwhile warned that "even a relatively benign no-deal Brexit" would see Britain's debt burden surge to 50-year highs.
