N.Korean fishing boat crew all rescued

Coastguard officials earlier said about 20 North Korean crew members were thrown into the sea after their steel boat collided with a Japanese Fisheries Agency inspection boat off the northern Japanese coast.

This photo released by the 9th Regional Japan Coast Guard Headquarters shows a Japanese Fisheries Agency patrol vessel at the site of its collision with a North Korean fishing boat, off the northwestern coast of the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa prefecture, on October 7, 2019.

The accident happened 350 km (217 miles) northwest of Noto peninsula, central Japan, at around 9:10 a.m. (0010 GMT), the spokesman said, saying that the Coast Guard was dispatching patrol ships to help with the rescue.

"[Japanese] vessel had warned the North Korean boat which appeared to be fishing for squid to leave the area before the collision, as it was deemed to be there illegally", the report said.

In June, Japan's coast guard pushed more than 300 North Korean boats back from the same waters.

The collision took place in the Sea of Japan on Monday morning, off the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Mainichi Shimbun reported.

Japan has stepped up patrols in the area as North Korean squid poaching has surged.

The coast guard's regional office in Niigata said officials handed the fishermen to another North Korean boat in the area after notifying The North's rescue coordination center to arrange their way home.

One of the vessels is Japanese and the other is a North Korean fishing vessel.

The agency used water cannon in 120 of those cases, according to its website.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to arrest North Korean fishing vessels engaging in what it calls persistent, large-scale intrusion into its EEZ in the Far East for illegal poaching.

Japan's coast guard's search for all the missing men are ongoing, the agency has said. "There were no injuries on our patrol ship", Eto told reporters.
