New Sleep app for Apple Watch spotted

New Sleep app for Apple Watch spotted

Previously, Apple was said to be developing this Sleep feature and was expected to be seen in released of the new Apple Watch.

It looks like Apple Watch might actually get that new Sleep app, which originally leaked last month but never materialised. This will allow users to set bedtime and wake up alarms on their Apple Watches, something now only possible on the iPhone or iPad.

There are third party sleep tracking apps for the Apple Watch but given Apple's walled garden in which first party apps really do work best, the alternatives have not been great. This means that unless you're reaching for your iPhone every time you get out of bed, it won't track times when you wake up in the middle of the night, or even if you get up before your alarm goes off.

At some point since The Verge noticed the potential Sleep app, Apple removed any reference to the app.

The latest Apple Watch Series 5 is one of the most advanced smartwatches when it comes to health tracking and other connectivity features. Apple was supposed to launch the Watch Series 5 with Sleep tracking but that did not happen. Apple had introduced ECG monitoring and Irregular Rhythm notifications in Watch 4 Series making it the most useful wearable for tracking heart health. Meanwhile, Apple has released watchOS 6 bringing in more features for the existing lineup as well. This could allow the new Sleep app to provide data on quality of sleep, rather than merely quantity.

There is now no sign of the Sleep app in the current watchOS 6.1 beta, but sleep tracking has previously been mentioned in internal iOS 13 betas. Since the Apple Watch needs to be on to record the sleep, the battery reminder feature is built for that. Apple could of course add it as a software update at a later date, however.
