Saxophone legend Kadri Gopalnath passes away!

Eminent Saxophone player Kadri Gopalnath passed away on Friday in Mangaluru. The 69-year-old musician was considered a pioneer of Carnatic music on the saxophone.

Hope the Central Government does the needful in issuing him passport and help him attend his father Kadri Gopalnath's funeral.

Kadri Gopalnath had won many accolades and awards in his career, which includes Kendra Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award, Karnataka Kalashree and others. Kadri Gopalnath was popular for introducing saxophone in the Carnatic music.

Gopalnath was reportedly taken to AJ Hospital and Research Centre after complaining of back pain on 10 October. He had played the saxaphone for Tamil film "Duet" helmed by the late director K Balachander with musical score by A R Rahman, popularising the otherwise lesser known instrument among audience in Tamil Nadu. Gopalnath was attracted to the saxophone after listening to a recital in the Mysore palace band set and developed a passion for it.

Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, among other artists and political figures, condoled the death of the saxophone legend in a statement given to The Hindu.

"In his death, the world of music has lost a great musician", he said.

His last rites are slated to be held later in the day as one of his sons is in the Middle East.
